I actually missed out on the whole Nintendo thing. The first actual game console I owned was an XBox (classic? Gen.1? First?). I never had an NES, SNES, N64, or SEGA, or any of that. I only ever got to play game consoles at friend’s houses. I’ve been tinkering with the Raspberry Pi platform and I’ve got a Retro Pi working. This made me think, how cool would it be to have a retro-styled case for the Pi?
I’m looking to see if I can make a usable Retro Pi with the Raspberry Pi Zero v1.3 (no wifi) because it’s cheap and I don’t think you’d need all the horsepower of the Pi 3 for retro gaming emulators. So I picked up my Zero and a 3$ USB 2.0 travel hub. I’m going to see if I can make a case out of dollar store foam board, the same stuff I use for my RC planes.
The obvious inspiration is for a NES look but why stop there? If it’s just foam board, why not SNES, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, DreamCast, or any other classic box?
If I really like how it comes out I can always make a mold and cast it in resin for a finished look.
I’m thinking of my own take on some of the classic game boxes. Maybe an “Andertainment 1200 Family Game Center”.
